Construction

The Tiablo ACE-G is very similar to the original ACE. The head comes in three basic parts, the bezel, middle and rear section. The bezel has shallow crenellations which allow light to shine through when placed head-down. The bezel can be easily unscrewed for access+ to the lens. The middle section of the head houses the large reflector used in the ACE. It is textured, the finish is excellent with no noticeable defects. The rear section of the head houses the LED module. The LED and reflector are well-aligned, perhaps just a hair off-center. The "+" contact for the battery is slightly raised from the electronics PCB in the head, so flat-topped 18650 cells may be used without problems. The exterior of the head has design elements with smooth design lines, a pair of thick fins are machined towards the rear of the head which helps with grip when the light is held in an over-hand grip.

http://www.light-reviews.com/tiablo_ace-g/02.jpgThe ACE-G is a rather large and hefty light, and even larger when using the extended battery tube. The battery tube has a very aggressive texture which provides very good grip. It's not really knurling in the traditional sense, rather a checkered grid design. The extended battery tube now matches the main battery tube in terms of design, unlike the earlier ACE. Threads on either end of the battery tube are thick and cleanly cut, they mate with the head and tail cap very smoothly. No signs of cross-threading or grinding was experienced during testing. Very thick rubber o-rings are placed on either ends of the battery tube which should provide very good moisture seals. The battery tube has robust thick walls but unlike the ACE, does not have a brass sleeve insert lining it's inner side. Threads on the rear end are anodized so you can effectively lock-out the light from activation by simply loosening the tail cap. Overall finish of the Type 3 anodizing is smooth and consistent throughout the exterior surface of the ACE-G, no flaws to be found. The tail cap is large and slightly wider than the battery tube thus helps when the ACE-G is held in a cigar-style grip. It has four flat faces machined around it with the Tiablo logo machined on each side. The rear end of the switch cap is also crenellated, but these are deeper than those on the bezel. They allow for easy activation of the switch while still allowing the light to stand of its tail. There are also four holes for lanyard attachments on each point of the crenellation. The single-mode switch is a forward push button with average travel, average tension and produces an audible and tactile feedback

OutputThe ACE-G uses an MC-E LED which is a single LED package housing up of four emitters. The beam profile produced has a medium sized hot spot with a very bright and wide corona around it. At close distances, this makes the hot spot look wider than it actually is. Beam color temperature is close to neutral white in the spot, and slightly warm around the corona. The sheer amount of light put put from the ACE-G is really impressive but slight less intense than the ACE, you'll have to be aware of this when using it indoors as the light might temporarily blow out your dark adapted vision.
Tiablo advertises the ACE-G as being able to run off a number of battery configurations ranging from 2.7V-18V, though during the test, I found the excessive heat produced when running on a 4x CR123 configuration was high enough to cause the batteries to show signs of failing after about 30 seconds of use. After checking with Tiablo, they mentioned that their engineers tested the ACE-G with 4x CR123 without facing the issues I encountered. Anyway if you do decide to use it in this configurations, it's better to be safe and keep a watch on it. With 2x CR123, the heat was still high enough to affect battery performance as can be seen in the runtime curve below, even with active cooling on the flashlight during tests. On battery configurations which it does work well with though, regulation and runtime is respectable.

Conclusion

The Good - Nice build quality, fit and finish. Thick aluminum parts provide good structural strength and durability. Good regulation and runtime considering the amount of light it outputs. Cheaper than the ACE with MC-E upgrade package.

The Bad - Huge amount of light may limit the ACE-G to specific uses. Some battery configurations do not perform well. The Relative - Beam has a neutral white color temperature. Hefty weight and size. Uses a forward push button switch. Is able to tail stand.
